Mermaids

They stood at the root of the water’s edge,
staring into salty rings of white and vine,
Thinking of Rachel.
She died last year, when the tides were cold and weary.
They won’t go there.
It didn’t seem fair to still love something so beautiful
without knowing why.
Tattered lace and tiny fingers rest the delicate surface
that is creviced by time and wiser than yesterday.
But to love at all seemed to shift the clouds caught in current.
Slowly. Softly.
Everything is plagued by the shadows of memory and
smells of dusty orange peels.
Four slender hands fuse the curve of skinny hip bones
as a modicum of silence swallows the air
with shards of patterned sunlight.
“Don’t worry.”  she said.  “We’ll be mermaids when we grow up.”

Designs by Bella: Vintage Lollipops x Magazzini del Sale Capsule Collection

Last year, Italian designer Graziano Moro of Magazzini Del Sale contacted me about collaborating and designing a five-piece Limited Edition capsule collection for their SS 11 Love Can Change the World t-shirt line. Having never been given such an incredibly surreal opportunity before, you can imagine my absolute surprise... followed by some sort of psychotic jubilation. At the time, I'd only been drawing for about a month, which means the designs you're seeing are some of my very first artworks! Brainstorming endless possibilities, the process began with a series of sketches, clipart graphics, and silhouette collages until I further conceptualized the vision by deciding to submit only my illustrations.  After presenting numerous options, Graziano and the team exclusively selected their top picks... and after several months of diligence, reworking, and constant communication, my artwork was transformed into a beautiful line of ecru shirts forever deemed, Vintage Lollipops x M…

A Harness to Hold Me

After months of insatiable cyber-stalking, I finally spotted the Sam Edelman vaulted wonders, and self-restraint immediately spider-webbed into an inextricable pursuit. A victim to the hunt, I admit, my initial reaction could easily be perceived as semi-ridiculous panic. Naturally, I called the momma bear. And even as her ritualized shopping excursion unfolded, she elicited a rather piercing squeal through the telephone receiver, which undoubtedly created a bevy of stares among the crowded grocery store aisles. Like a little devil perched high upon my right shoulder, she urged me to buy them… evidently an advocate to my daringly unapologetic platform fetish. A silent negotiation yanked me from reverie, and a minute later, Ben called verifying my bootstrapped harness wishes would soon be one among my closet’s legion. Maybe they’re just a pair of shoes, but they were going to mine… and when the e-mail confirmation deep-rooted his completely unexpected purchase, all he said was, “Well, I…
