We'll be mermaids when we grow up

~Fishtail braids and fishtails~
I started this piece about six months, diligently worked like a relentless machine, and somehow managed to complete 90% of it in the first five days. On the other hand, the scale detailing remains an entirely differently story. One of which resonates a certain, "Sooooo, when do you plan on finishing the mermaid?" that has evidently become a mainstay phrase in my family. Ahem, Alex.

Re-posting my poem...

They stood at the root of the water’s edge,
staring into salty rings of white and vine,
Thinking of Rachel.
She died last year, when the tides were cold and weary.
They won’t go there.
It didn’t seem fair to still love something so beautiful
without knowing why.
Tattered lace and tiny fingers rest the delicate surface
that is creviced by time and wiser than yesterday.
But to love at all seemed to shift the clouds caught in current.
Slowly. Softly.
Everything is plagued by the shadows of memory and
smells of dusty orange peels.
Four slender hands fuse the curve of skinny hip bones
as a modicum of silence swallows the air
with shards of patterned sunlight.
“Don’t worry.”  she said.  “We’ll be mermaids when we grow up.”

Dirty Little Secret

While casually perusing the supermarket isles for those everyday staples, I think I briefly lost consciousness when I spotted these righteous tie-dye skinnies crammed amongst a hoard of others like some dirty little secret. Beneath a storm of florescent lighting, there they were at Walmart (!!), waiting for well-deserved recognition! Extracting reasonable doubt, I immediately implemented their placement into my wardrobe… vacillation need not apply. p.s. I'm terribly busy with a manuscript deadline, but will be visiting everyone very soon. And for those who so thoughtfully granted me awards, I promise I haven't forgotten... but on the contrary, am working on a special thank you post. xx Vintage Sequin Jacket... Promiscuous Heels... Around the Museum

Adept to artistic recreation, I wrenched this blue button-down from the retirement section of my closet… evidently, I’ve been on some sort of 007 sewing safari. Sated with a neo-trashy romanticism, its charming DIY imperfection materialized this impromptu photo excursion, even though I should have been working. But from the sun-drenched corners of a museum shop, I rubbed out the shadows of a recent stress purgatory, as the city voice seemed a tangible reawakening. Shirt, DIY (Meadham Kirchhoff inspiration). The Carousel Ride

A little storytelling... A modicum of silence swallowed the room as dusty shards of sunlight patterned the multicolored carpet. Decorated with an army of garish jewelry, everything jingles, almost intentionally, as the woman perched behind the large candy counter brushes invisible lint from her blouse. Her silvery hair is the color of cotton candy. She offers a genuine smile before shifting her gaze downcast towards her slender hands. Briefly, she examines their delicate surface that is creviced by time and wiser than yesterday. At four quarters per ride, it was a small price for six minutes of uncontaminated childhood reminiscence to sweep the memory warehouse. And while we kept the company of an epoch 1920’s carousel, 60 handcrafted horses, and funky reindeer, we went round and round, faster and faster… letting it take us to those secret places we almost forgot existed. --Bella H. p.s.
