They said it was a Trail of Tears

I don’t have to search futilely the dank corners of an attic riddled with dust, or spend hours wading through the unbounded contents of a relic cherrywood trunk to grasp the secret language of my heritage. Because in the darkness of quiet spaces, when the world was seduced by a requiem of sleep, I heard the myriad of stories that taught me of my Great Grandmother’s upbringing. As a child, I learned of her survival and the devastating circumstances that transpired during the forced relocation to Indian reservations west of the Mississippi River. And even in the fades of memory, the truth can resurface… and some stories live to linger.
So as one of my latest writing projects unfurls its raw edges, what I’ve rediscovered is that sometimes, getting back to your roots is a journey all in itself.

p.s. Special thanks to the Modepass team for my wicked Flair Magazine Spotlight!

My mother never really talked about our native heritage. As a performer, it was better kept "under wraps". She was not permitted to enter some public clubs because she was native. It wasn't until I was much older that I came to embrace that side of me.
I really loved this post, and you are, as always, very beautiful. xo

Bella, you are so beautiful. And I love that your great grandmother was such a strong and inspiring woman! Good for you for getting back to your roots!
These photos are seriously just stunning. You are, as always, so gorgeous!
You have very special blood running through your veins. My great-grandmother was full-blooded Cherokee Indian, and she also had a very difficult and painful life. But she was so kind and giving and never would harm anyone. I believe her sweet spirit still shines upon me daily.

It´s a pity that a big part of their culture has disappeared, preserve what you can.

The Writing Wall

Affronted by a (practically) nonexistent warning sign, the weather-beaten plastic dangling idly from a nearby telephone pole, clearly stated, Private Property . Even though our previous attempt at this location resulted in a prying patrol car… the graffiti mural, a derelict carcass of a once prominent amusement park, was obviously too wicked to pass blindly. Sprinting around with certain schoolgirl giddiness, the ridiculous amount of camerawhoring was starting to feel like some new Olympic sport. But before finally fleeing the scene, we noticed the black and red letters smeared across the far right side of the building that perhaps claimed an excuse to previous visitors. ' The Devil Made Me Do It' . Disturbing to small degrees, it did seem outwardly apropos to our deviant trespassing acquisition… our forbidden spray paint entertainment. The Carousel Ride

A little storytelling... A modicum of silence swallowed the room as dusty shards of sunlight patterned the multicolored carpet. Decorated with an army of garish jewelry, everything jingles, almost intentionally, as the woman perched behind the large candy counter brushes invisible lint from her blouse. Her silvery hair is the color of cotton candy. She offers a genuine smile before shifting her gaze downcast towards her slender hands. Briefly, she examines their delicate surface that is creviced by time and wiser than yesterday. At four quarters per ride, it was a small price for six minutes of uncontaminated childhood reminiscence to sweep the memory warehouse. And while we kept the company of an epoch 1920’s carousel, 60 handcrafted horses, and funky reindeer, we went round and round, faster and faster… letting it take us to those secret places we almost forgot existed. --Bella H. p.s. Mad Hatter's Club

Must've been feeling a bit Guns N' Roses... With the celebratory catawampus winding down like an elderly jack-in-the-box leftover from the fades of childhood memory, we meant for a subdued and only mildly scandalous New Year’s Eve. A slight difference from the model of fulsome traditions, our intimate dinner party--fully fledged in the company of my love child camera, tippy top hats, and cocktails--came in with a whisper and went out with a bang. And as I stare to the horizon of 2009 and to all the rock’n possibilities sauntering forward with the New Year… a smile washes over. And into this vast internet superhighway, warmest wishes go out to The Minx and Fashionably Early , both ever lovely (!!!)… thank you for my blog awards. Colin Stuart ankle boots.
