Just because she's pretty, it doesn't mean you're not

The Real Beauty Sketches story is incredibly beautiful, inspirational and for me, so deeply personal. I never talk about this outside of my own thoughts, but I watched this video twice... and I let my head fall into my hands... and I cried. I wanted to know these women, so I quickly headed over to Dove so that I could appreciate the entire story. It was like a shimmering light bulb turned on in this very dark room I was living in, helping me realize the extremely laden self-criticisms I place on my appearance on a daily basis. When was the last time I even felt an authentic sense of confidence, I wondered but the answer didn't come. Over-analyzing, comparing myself to others, relentlessly critiquing, my critical eye never seems to tire at pointing out every single infinitesimal detail I feel needs changing. And then this loathsome, self-deprecating fear and worry sets in and I worry and worry some more about every fine line, every scar I can't hide, every pound on the scale, every flaw that I've allowed to dominate and literally scar the way I perceive and generally feel about myself. We, as people, ask kindly to not be judged or labeled but the reality for many is that we are already doing this to ourselves. The thing is that most of the time, I camouflage the truth and this outward veneer, like that of a tired sparrow, has a tendency to curtain the beautiful qualities I should be grateful for... the qualities I should be embracing. Today, I've learned to treat myself better.

The Body

You can barely see it in the last post , so here's a clearer picture of   what I've been working on in my new art studio... not that it hasn't come with little stop your heart stress moments.   The first time I attempted this piece, now referred to as The Body , was mutually as terrifying as it was exhilarating. It was the first full hand drawing I'd ever attempted, and everything was going smoothly until the moment I decided to incorporate oil paint, also the first in my artwork experiences. My grandmother was an award-winning artist, but now, without her wealth of knowledge and go-to advise, this is really a learning/teach yourself process. The drawing was done and exactly how I wanted it, the hair and tights were painted, and the final stages involved adding skin and the completion of the tattoos.   I didn't go in naively, I understood that it would inevitably boil down to the dynamics of trial and error, so I inhaled deeply and began creating my palette. Jeffrey Campbell x Solestruck Box It Up

I bet many of you heard about (or even entered) the Jeffrey Campbell x Solestruck Box It Up challenge that took place last month that's giving one lucky person the opportunity to score $1000 worth of JC shoes and be the inspiration for the next shoebox design. And while I think they're still in the process of narrowing down three top finalists to display via their Facebook page for voters to decide the grand winner, I thought I'd take a second and share my entry with you! About my design: When I first learned of the challenge via e-mail, I got super excited at the prospect of designing and illustrating something that would appeal to the masses amongst our little shoe-obsessed demographic. I get asked a lot of interesting questions regarding my own shoe collection, so I spent the afternoon rummaging through the multicolored stacks of shoeboxes and paying particular attention the many labeled Jeffrey Campbell. The search for inspiration wasn’t difficult, and soon I knew ex
